Rain

Writer's picture: Benjamin MengdenBenjamin Mengden

I found the rain gauge yesterday

Broken in the bottom of a box

On the back porch, cornered

Today it was raining

Beautiful defiance of the rain

Unmeasured

Taunting me

So I walked to work in the rain

Thinking I probably wouldn’t get that wet

But the rain, still unmeasured,

Taunted me again

So I sit barefoot at the office

Shoes propped up against the wall

And such

There’s the faint warble

The rain makes to your eyes

As you strain to see from a window

If there’s still rain

And it’s funny how the rain

When we are in full drought

And needing rain so bad

And depleting our ground stores

And shrinking the clay around the foundation

And rippling the wood and tile and counters from each other

Because it’s a drought and not just in word but deed

But the rain

Still unsettles some

From their rainless routine

But to me!

It’s rain! Real rain
